Bearwood Lakes: Championship Golf in a Spectacular Woodland Setting

As a golf professional, I am always impressed by courses that combine first-class presentation with genuine strategic interest. Bearwood Lakes Golf Club achieves both exceptionally well. Set within approximately 200 acres of beautiful Berkshire countryside, the course winds through mature woodland, natural lakes and gently undulating terrain, creating one of England's most polished private golf experiences.

The course officially opened in 1996 and was designed by Guy Hockley under the direction of renowned golf architect Martin Hawtree. Although relatively modern, it has the appearance and atmosphere of a layout that has occupied the landscape for generations. Mature oak, beech and pine trees frame many of the holes, while the natural contours ensure that the design feels completely integrated into its surroundings.

Playing to a par of 72 and measuring around 6,850 yards from the back tees, Bearwood Lakes provides a serious test for accomplished golfers without relying on length alone. Water comes into play on several holes, while carefully positioned bunkers and beautifully shaped green complexes reward players who think ahead. My priority from the tee would always be to identify the best angle for the next shot rather than simply aiming for maximum distance.

The fairways are generally inviting, but the ideal landing areas can be much narrower than they first appear. A drive placed on the correct side may open the full length of a green, while a ball finishing only a few yards away can leave an approach blocked by trees, bunkers or water. It is this attention to angles that gives the course much of its strategic character.

Accuracy, Patience and Intelligent Positioning

Bearwood Lakes encourages controlled golf. There are opportunities to attack, particularly when you find the correct section of the fairway, but careless aggression is quickly punished. When water guards the direct route, I prefer selecting a target that removes the biggest danger and leaves a comfortable yardage. A confident shot towards a sensible area will usually produce a better result than an uncertain attempt at the flag.

Approach play is especially important because the greens are constructed to reward precise distance control. Some offer generous entrances, while others are protected by bunkers or water that make the safer side immediately obvious. Before choosing a club, I would assess the flag position, the safest miss and whether the ball is likely to release after landing.

The quality of the setting also adds considerably to the experience. The lakes provide both beauty and challenge, while the woodland creates a peaceful sense of separation between holes. Despite being within easy reach of London and the Thames Valley, the course feels wonderfully secluded once the round begins.

Bearwood Lakes is a course that rewards every part of the game. Accurate driving creates better angles, controlled iron play provides realistic scoring opportunities and a patient short game prevents small mistakes becoming costly ones. It is demanding without feeling unfair and visually impressive without allowing appearance to overpower strategy.
