As a golf professional, I have always believed that some of the finest golfing experiences aren't found on the longest courses but on those that demand imagination, precision and an appreciation of traditional links golf. Fortrose & Rosemarkie Golf Club is one of those rare places. Situated on the Chanonry Peninsula overlooking the Moray Firth, this remarkable links has been challenging golfers since 1793 and is widely regarded as one of the oldest and most scenic golf courses in the world.

At just over 6,400 yards from the championship tees and playing to a par of 71, the course proves that championship golf isn't measured purely in length. Instead, Fortrose & Rosemarkie relies on firm links turf, ever-changing coastal winds, natural contours and beautifully crafted greens to create a golfing examination that rewards thoughtful play above all else. Standing on the first tee, my priority is never distance. Instead, I focus on controlling ball flight. A low, penetrating shot that lands short and runs naturally is often far more effective than a high ball trying to fight the breeze. That's one of the greatest lessons traditional links golf teaches us. Let the course do the work rather than trying to overpower it.

The routing is simply outstanding. Several holes run alongside the coastline, offering magnificent views across the Moray Firth where dolphins are regularly spotted from the fairways. It is one of the few places where I genuinely find myself pausing to appreciate the scenery before focusing on the next shot. The combination of spectacular surroundings and strategic golf makes every round memorable.

What impresses me most about Fortrose & Rosemarkie is how every hole encourages creativity. There are very few occasions where there is only one correct way to play a shot. Depending on the wind, the firmness of the fairways and your own strengths, you may choose to run the ball along the ground, shape it around a bunker or play directly at the flag. That freedom of choice is one of the defining qualities of great links golf.

Course management becomes particularly important on the inward nine. Deep revetted bunkers, natural rough and subtle undulations punish poor decisions more than poor swings. My advice is to accept the occasional long putt rather than attacking every flag. On links greens, leaving yourself below the hole almost always provides the best opportunity to save strokes.

Although steeped in history, the club offers a wonderfully welcoming atmosphere. Visitors are greeted warmly, the clubhouse enjoys panoramic coastal views and the sense of tradition is evident from the moment you arrive. It's easy to understand why golfers from around the world make the journey to this corner of the Scottish Highlands.
