Longniddry Golf Club: Where Links Golf Meets Woodland Strategy

As a golf professional, I particularly enjoy courses that require players to adapt as the character of the landscape changes. Longniddry Golf Club provides exactly that experience. Situated on the south shore of the Firth of Forth on Scotland's famous Golf Coast, the course combines traditional links characteristics with tree-lined inland holes, creating an unusual and demanding test where positioning, trajectory and intelligent course management are essential.

Designed originally by the great Harry S. Colt, Longniddry plays to a par of 68 and measures 6,265 yards from the white tees. The scorecard immediately reveals something unusual: there are no par fives for men. Instead, the challenge comes from a formidable collection of par fours, including several stretching beyond 400 yards. This places far greater emphasis on accurate driving and strong approach play than the relatively modest overall yardage might suggest.

The combination of woodland and links terrain makes Longniddry particularly interesting strategically. On the more sheltered holes, trees define the ideal driving lines and reward accuracy. As the course becomes more exposed, the wind from the Firth of Forth becomes increasingly influential, requiring golfers to adjust both club selection and trajectory.

My approach would be to avoid judging holes solely by the distance shown on the scorecard. A 400-yard par four played downwind on firm ground can be considerably easier than a shorter hole facing directly into a strong coastal breeze. Before selecting a club, establish the wind direction and decide exactly where you want the ball to finish.

The Long Par Fours Define the Challenge

Longniddry's third hole provides an early indication of the examination ahead. At 460 yards from the white tees, this par four requires two very good shots for most golfers. The seventh is another demanding par four at 428 yards and carries stroke index one. On holes of this length, I would resist trying to manufacture additional distance and concentrate instead on producing two controlled, well-balanced swings.

The shorter holes provide an important contrast. The par threes vary from the demanding 194-yard fourth to the 144-yard 16th. These are valuable scoring opportunities, but only if distance control is good. When the wind is moving across the course, aim towards the widest part of the green and allow the conditions to move the ball naturally rather than fighting them.

The closing two holes ensure the round remains demanding until the end. The 17th measures 433 yards and the 18th 432 yards from the white tees. If you arrive at this point with a good score, patience becomes particularly important. Fairway first, green second and two putts is a perfectly acceptable strategy on both.

A Course That Demands Different Shots

Longniddry's great strength is that one style of golf will not carry you successfully through all eighteen holes. The woodland sections reward controlled direction and precise positioning, while the links-style holes encourage lower trajectories and imaginative use of the ground. Golfers who can adapt quickly to those changing demands have a significant advantage.

The architecture has an impressive pedigree too. Harry Colt created the original course, while subsequent work involved other celebrated names including James Braid and Philip Mackenzie Ross, with Donald Steel later advising on aspects of the design and bunkering. The result is a course with considerable architectural heritage that still provides a relevant challenge for the modern golfer.

Longniddry Golf Club is a fascinating East Lothian test that should never be underestimated. Its par of 68, absence of men's par fives and collection of demanding par fours make good ball striking important, while the mixture of woodland, links terrain and coastal wind rewards golfers capable of thinking their way around the course. Play patiently, control your trajectory and choose your targets carefully, and Longniddry provides a wonderfully satisfying round of Scottish golf.
